Wake Forest School of Medicine Students Offer Free Screenings

Press Releases Hospital, Medicine, WakeForestBaptist, Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sept. 11, 2017 – Wake Forest School of Medicine students will offer free screenings and health information at the second annual Boomer Share the Health Fair, which served more than 50 people last year.

The event will be held this Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Thankful Community Center, 416 Thankful Church Road, in the Wilkes County community of Boomer.

The health fair was started last year by Erin Saner, a fourth-year School of Medicine student with family ties to Wilkes and Yadkin counties.

“We’re able to sit down one-on-one with people, listen to their concerns and often show them easy ways they can improve their health”, said Saner. “People learn to recognize risk factors and symptoms and understand how incorporating exercise and better nutrition can help them avoid some common diseases.”

Physician consultations will be offered this year, along with a variety of screenings and health education for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, vision, nutrition, advance directives, exercise and behavioral health. People who are found to have health issues that require further attention will be given referrals and information about additional steps they should take.

Spanish-language interpreters will be present and the fair is open to adults and children regardless of age, income, insurance coverage or immigration status.

The Boomer Share the Health Fair is sponsored by Wake Forest School of Medicine, Northwest Area Health Education Center and the Thankful Community Club.
