Dermatologists to Offer Free Skin Cancer Screening

Press Releases Hospital, Medicine, WakeForestBaptist, Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 2, 2017 – Dermatologists with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center will offer free skin cancer screenings on Thursday, May 18 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Medical Plaza – Country Club, located at 4618 Country Club Road in Winston-Salem.

It’s estimated that around 76,000 people were newly diagnosed with skin cancer last year in the United States.

Although skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and can affect anyone of any age, males and people over the age of 40 are at an increased risk. Other risk factors include smoking, having a family history of skin cancer, a high mole count, fair skin and significant exposure to sunlight or indoor tanning beds.

“Most skin cancers are curable if they are detected early enough, and that’s why we encourage anyone who has these risk factors to receive a yearly skin screen,” said Amy McMichael, M.D., chair of dermatology at Wake Forest Baptist. “At last year’s free screening event, we were able to check more than 250 people and identified 61 possible skin cancers.”

No appointment is necessary and parking is free.

Wake Forest Baptist is home to the region’s leading dermatology department, treating patients from North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and beyond in our state-of-the-art clinic.
